Nutrition Advice & Supplements
Some of the biggest things that people get risked out of midwifery care for that can be avoided with good supplementation are:
- Anemia (not even true anemia but anything under 10.1 starts to make midwives concerned for postpartum hemorrhaging)
- Pre-eclampsia or hypertension (they are not the same thing, don’t let anyone tell you they are!)
- Cholestasis which stems from poor digestive functioning especially in the liver and kidneys
- Prolonged rupture of membranes (PROM) – when the water breaks and 24 hours later there is still no baby or signs of progression in labor.
Supplements I recommend to avoid that:
- High dose vitamin C, specifically ascorbic acid. This increases sac strength to hopefully avoid PROM.

To keep your iron at a healthy level in addition to a good diet with greens included daily:
- Nettle, Oatstraw and Alfalfa tea make an awesome combo to have daily for a boost of overall vitamins and minerals. They have everything you need for daily essentials. I recommend sourcing the herbs individually from Mountain Rose Herbs. It is more cost effective than purchasing pre made tea bags. https://mountainroseherbs.com
- Black strap molasses – at least 2tbsp a day, really easy to mix into a bowl of yogurt or a protein shake, MUST be black strap, regular molasses isn’t the same
- Chlorophyll – get a glycerin based chlorophyll supplement, to make it yummy and easy to consume. https://amzn.to/31CPDsB. Generally a capful a day is sufficient unless anemia is severe. (More on Chlorophyll here)
- Desiccated beef liver capsules – https://amzn.to/37zIpJO
For good digestive health:
- Betaine HCL with Pepsin! This should be taken with every single meal. It helps increase stomach acid which breaks down every meal as much as possible so there is a plethora of absorption and especially good protein rich meals are not wasted. https://amzn.to/2Hraqs2
- Digestive enzymes. This keeps your gut flora healthy, your gallbladder functioning well, which leads to healthy kidneys and liver. It will also help prevent nausea and heartburn. https://www.isotonix.com/…/isotonix-digestive…/…
- A high protein diet is the BEST way to keep your body healthy and in alignment. I strongly recommend the Dr Brewers diet to everybody. The website is A LOT of info but well worth the read. It gives very clear instructions on what/how much to eat daily. http://drbrewerpregnancydiet.com
The goal with the supplements below is not to treat but to prevent hypertension from occurring:
- Cayenne tincture. By far the most disgusting tincture you will ever have in your entire life but it WORKS! It not only keeps blood pressure balanced but keeps swelling and water retention down, and reduces risks of blood clots postpartum. This is the only company I’ve found other than making my own, which I trust: https://www.herbsoflight.com/products/cayenne-1oz?_pos=1…
- IF blood pressure starts to go up even just a teeny bit, start supplementing with Magnesium Sulfate. This is what they administer in the hospital to treat preterm labor as well as high blood pressure, via IV but it can be accessed at home. It’s not worth the risk to wait to be risked out of care! Beware that Mag Sulfate makes ya poop! https://amzn.to/3ouu4Ey You can also purchase large bags of epsom salt and vegetable capsules and make the capsules yourself!
I know it seems like a lot at first but you can totally replace the prenatal vitamins you’re taking with these supplements and they will help so much more than the pills will! Most prenatal vitamins you just pee right out anyways and they don’t go to good use!
